Description

One of Helmut Newton's favourite sitters, the English actress Charlotte Rampling was an icon of the Swinging Sixties. A fashion icon, muse and film star, Rampling worked across European cinema in English, French and Italian with the likes of Woody Allen, Paul Newman and Robert Redford. Of all work produced by Newton and Rampling, none are as intimate portrayal as this. Cast as the destructive femme fatale, Newton's masterful control of lighting and composition suggests the oscillating sides to her character: at once strong and fragile, confident and fearful.

"I like photographing women who appear to know something of life. I recently did a session with a great beauty, a movie star in in her thirties. I photographed her twice within three weeks and the second time I said: "You're much more beautiful today than you were three weeks ago." And she replied: "But I'm also three weeks older"."
