Description

Shot for French Vogue in 1977, 'Chez Patou' is a dramatic take on the atelier model. Laced with attitude and independence, Newton reveals the inner character of the models otherwise suppressed by the function of their task. Here, the model not the clothing becomes the focus of the photograph. When Newton did shoot indoors, he preferred to use the ateliers of his artist and designer friends in Paris.

"There must be a certain look of availability in the women I photograph. I think the woman who gives the appearance of being available is sexually much more exciting than a woman who's completely distant. This sense of availability I find erotic."
