This cavernous photograph by Matthias Hakker of art nouveau architecture mixes monochrome with flashes of yellow. Gothic-inspired, Haker’s symmetrical composition spotlights the stucco detailing of the ceiling in a warm, yellow light.

In this shot of Table Rock in Niagara Falls, Darwin displays his powers as a landscape photographer. He has captured the water falling using a long exposure, the effect is as if you are standing on the edge. In the distance, a bright sun partially breaks through the clouds while fog gets trapped below.

This electric nightscape of cars passing under, through and over a motorway system is a stunning example of the beautiful inherent in our civil engineering. Using a long exposure and filtering the image in black and white, Wada captures the movement of the night as a hectic mess of white lights.

Titled ‘Westside Highway’ after the famous New York motorway, this work doesn’t aim to provide us with a photographic record of the road, but a feeling of its atmosphere. The blurred chromatic spots are evocative of street lights, buses and glowing signs protruding into the night.
