LUMINOUS

LET THERE BE LIGHT – MATTHIAS HAKER

This cavernous photograph by Matthias Hakker of art nouveau architecture mixes monochrome with flashes of yellow. Gothic-inspired, Haker’s symmetrical composition spotlights the stucco detailing of the ceiling in a warm, yellow light.

HORSESHOE FALLS – DARWIN WIGGETT

In this shot of Table Rock in Niagara Falls, Darwin displays his powers as a landscape photographer. He has captured the water falling using a long exposure, the effect is as if you are standing on the edge. In the distance, a bright sun partially breaks through the clouds while fog gets trapped below.

SHADOW BALLET – YOSHIHIKO WADA

This electric nightscape of cars passing under, through and over a motorway system is a stunning example of the beautiful inherent in our civil engineering. Using a long exposure and filtering the image in black and white, Wada captures the movement of the night as a hectic mess of white lights.

GLACIAL LIGHTS – MATT FREESTONE

This image was shot during a late night shoot capturing the aurora borealis over the Jökulsárlón glacial lake in Iceland. The dancing Northern Lights play over the colossal ice calved from the glacier beyond.

RUSHING HOME 2 – YONG LIN TAN

This photograph of a man chasing a bus on a rainy day is a powerful image in which Lin sums up the idea of ‘never giving up’. Elegantly composed, Lin uses the flashes of the long-exposure to hone in on the single man, drawing our eye into the single man running down the middle of the street.

WESTSIDE HIGHWAY – TIM HALL

Titled ‘Westside Highway’ after the famous New York motorway, this work doesn’t aim to provide us with a photographic record of the road, but a feeling of its atmosphere. The blurred chromatic spots are evocative of street lights, buses and glowing signs protruding into the night.

CORONA – HAMISH ROOTS

As if a painting, the striations of green and purple are a testament to the beauty of nature. Hamish captures the image in stunning details, even down to the millions of tiny stars that litter the night sky.

LIGHT ON WATER – TAL PAZ-FRIDMAN

“Light on Water” depicts how beauty in nature can come in the simplest of forms. Sun rays sparkling on a body of water. The lens is taken intentionally out of focus to enhance the dream-like qualities of the image.

PIER 7 – SHUMON SAITO

San Francisco Pier 7 is a popular spot for some serious crab fishing at night and offers spectacular and romantic views of the city with the twinkling lights.

MILLENIUM WHEEL AT SUNRISE – HOWARD KINGSNORTH

Only possible with special permission, Howard shot this from a helicopter over the Palace of Westminster at sunrise in 2015.
