Gene Simmons

Gene Simmons, 2016.
iCons project for Elton John AIDS Foundation

I shot Gene in his home in LA. He lives in this huge mansion with one of the largest rooms being a collection of KISS memorabilia, from KISS condoms to a KISS coffin! He was pleasant to speak to, despite his catalogue of Michael Jackson jokes. But when he stepped in front of the camera he turned into a pastiche of himself, which was fun to see and capture.

ABOUT GENE SIMMONS

Born Chaim Witz on August 25, 1949 in Haifa, Israel, Gene Simmons first decided he wanted to be in a band while in middle school, after watching girls scream at The Beatles on TV.

He was in several bands before co-founding KISS with Paul Stanley in the 1970s.

Simmons later pursued interests in fashion, publishing, and acting, and starred in the A&E reality TV show Gene Simmons Family Jewels.

George Clooney

George Clooney, 2003.
Degrees Project

I shot George at his beautiful Lake Como residence. When I arrived, breakfast was being served on the veranda. It seemed more like a five-star hotel then a private house. After breakfast, George disappeared to find a space which had a plain white wall for the shoot. I had to manoeuvre my equipment around three obese (live) ducks in the hallway. But my tripod hit his bookshelf and a very large World Atlas dislodged from the shelf and plummeted onto a duck. In a panic – and not knowing what to do with an unconscious duck – I kicked it behind the bookshelf. George soon re-emerged wearing a pirate's hat, which he had worn at a dinner party the previous night. When I pointed out what a fool he looked, he started roaring with laughter – there was my pic! Not long after the shoot, there was a muffled quack from behind the bookshelf and a dazed duck waddled out. I let out a nervous giggle. I found George, as you can imagine, a very charismatic man and you get the impression that he very quickly is in tune with anyone he is engaging with. Yet unlike Brad Pitt, George tailors how much George he gives you.

Harrison Ford

Harrison Ford, 2014.
iCons project for Elton John AIDS Foundation

I was a first for Harrison Ford. The first person who ever asked him to do a silly face… When I asked him, he looked at me perplexed, laughed and stated "No one has ever asked me to do silly faces before because they all think I'm a grumpy b*stard." I had heard whispers in the industry that you treat Harrison with kid gloves and not to ask him for anything that deviates from his iconic masculine status of Indiana Jones. I was the first to ask him to step away from that and look at the results.

ABOUT HARRISON FORD

Born on July 13, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, Harrison Ford struggled for years as an actor before George Lucas cast him in 1973's American Graffiti.

Ford then hit superstardom as Han Solo in the first three Star Wars films and as Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark and its three sequels, which were all monster successes.

He has had leading roles in numerous Hollywood films such as Blade Runner, Witness, Working Girl, Patriot Games, The Fugitive and 42, among many others.

In 2015 he returned to his Han Solo role in a big way with Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens.

David Gandy

I shot David in Flemings Mayfair. Being a model, David not me, it was a very easy shoot. He turned up in a three piece suit as he had just had a business meeting. He looked fab but I thought he is known for his body so I asked him to disrobe. Like most models they don't even blink when you ask them to get naked, and David was the same. I tried to light him with more shadow, so it didn't look like a 'model shot' and I think between us we arrived at the perfect balance.

ABOUT DAVID GANDY

After winning a televised competition in 2001, Gandy became a successful model.

In an industry dominated by extremely thin men, Gandy's muscular build caught the eye of Italian fashion designers Dolce & Gabbana. For several years, the duo featured him in their campaigns and fashion shows, ultimately leading other designers to move to a more masculine standard.

Gandy has been the face of D&G's Light Blue fragrance since 2006, shooting multiple campaigns and touring internationally as the brand's ambassador.

The increase in his popularity and name recognition resulted in a broad portfolio of clients, magazine covers, editorial photo shoots, interviews, industry awards and television appearances.

Dustin Hoffman

Dustin Hoffman, 2001.
Degrees Project

I shot Dustin in his office in Los Angeles. He is a businessman through and through, who everyone says in a pain in the ass because he is always right, no matter what. All the way through he was dictating a script over his shoulder to his daughter. I was lucky to get any shots in which he has his mouth shut. Half way through the shoot I suggested we do a series of shots with him taking his shirt off, and although I was expecting a negative response Dustin started to disrobe. During this striptease I quipped "Mr Hoffman are you trying to seduce me"...it was a hilarious shoot!

Brad Pitt

BRAD PITT, 2003.
DEGREES PROJECT

This shoot was part of my Degrees Project and came through Dustin Hoffman. It took place at Pinewood studios whilst Brad was filming Troy in 2003. I was told to expect Brad at 2pm. At around 1pm I had a knock on the door and in came a guy in a cap, sunglasses with a rucksack… The man lifted his sunglasses to introduce himself as Brad Pitt, like I would not have recognised him otherwise. We spent a lot of the shoot chatting, mostly Brad asking me questions about my life. It created a very relaxed environment and I believe this came across in the images. Brad is someone who wants to know about you as a person. He is so unhollywood and treats everyone the same, whether they are a fellow film star or crew on set. Brad makes you feel he's on your level and you can often forget you are talking to a film star.

Benedict Cumberbatch

Benedict Cumberbatch, 2013.
Commission: Britannia Awards 2013

The Commission was for a nice regal portrait of the person and the award. What Bafta wanted I took in two or three frames so when I asked him to do a few obscure shots he was up for it. Benedict has such a bendy/stretchy face. It worked really well. Benedict is someone who is relaxed about how he looks, however, he is a person who always questions himself and his surroundings, I worked that into the shoot.

Christopher Lee

Christopher Lee, 2005.
Degrees Project

I shot Christopher in 2005, 10 years before he died. Not many people know he was in the Guinness Book of Records for the most screen credits for a living actor in 2007. As we walked through the Savoy Hotel, Christopher noticed the sheet music on the walls from Gilbert and Sullivan. Christopher said "Did you know I sing everyday, I was a classically trained Baritone" He then started to break into song of Three Little Maids, The Mikado. He belted it out in the hallway of the Savoy and it was an impressive sight. As we got into the room he insisted on tea and a cigar and as he smoked it I started shooting. When I originally showed him the images he particularly hated the ones of him smoking. Yet a year later he spotted one of the smoking images in an article by the Times. I then received a call from Lady Lee requesting from him copies of the photo, obviously over time he had grown to love it.

Danny DeVito

Danny DeVito, 2012.
iCons project for Elton John AIDS Foundation

I shot Danny at the Savoy Theatre, whilst he was appearing in Sunshine Boys. I set up the shoot to happen between his Matinee and Evening Performance. It was a very atmospheric shoot as I set up on the stage. Danny is generally a very relaxed character yet got a little too relaxed on this shoot… he fell asleep halfway through the shoot. I thought he was doing a series of silly faces, winky eyes, that was until the snoring started. As I kicked his chair to bring him out of his slumber he apologised profusely. He explained having been around film sets for so many years he is a professional at taking power naps between takes. Danny is not only a professional napper. He is a professional in all senses of the word. He can turn it on when required of him and he is a library of knowledge when it comes to film. It's an education to be in his presence. With regard to the shoot, I felt he knew what I wanted. He's a bit like a woody Allen that way.

Alice Cooper

Alice Cooper, 2009.
iCons project for Elton John AIDS Foundation

I shot Alice (or Vincent) in Flemings Mayfair. What bowled me over was how articulate and knowledgeable he was. He was great friends with Salvador Dali, and Dali made several sculptures featuring Alice. But the story that blew me away was the fact Alice was good friends with Groucho Marx. Groucho was an insomniac and would phone Alice and ask him to pop over to his house at 2-3am. They would sit in bed together and watch old movies. Now THAT would have been a Kodak moment.
