Description

A most unconventional portrait, Andy Warhol is alive but is positioned and laid out as if sleeping or even dead. This picture launched the first issue of Helmut Newton Illustrated with the title “Sex and Power.” With the camera positioned above and looking down upon Warhol, it's as if we are being invited to pay our last respects, in a voyeuristic intimacy.

Description

"Sie Kommen" is one of the most iconic Newton images. It adorned his exhibitions in near life-size, providing a sculptural statement of Newton's fascination for strong yet beautiful woman. Life-sized versions of this photograph featured in Newton's "Private Property" Exhibitions in London and Paris and it is one of the photographs Newton included in his iconic book, Sumo.

“The point of my photography has always been to challenge myself, to go a little further than my Germanic discipline and Teutonic nature would traditionally permit me to.”

Woman Being Filmed

Woman Being Filmed

Description

In 'Woman being filmed' Newton combines two of his favourite themes: the voyeuristic gaze and empowered, nonchalant sexuality of the lady. This candid portrait of a group of onlookers fills the room with an erotic tension that plays on the psychosexual fantasies Newton so readily drew from. Provocatively unashamed to exposure gender hierarchies in a coolly detached manner, Newton's work spoke to a politically incorrect realism that exposed fantasies modelled around the femme fatale.

“They often ask me to shoot for them. But I say no. I think an old guy like me ought not take pages away from young photographers who need the exposure.”

Description

Helmut Newton and David Bowie were close friends through the 80's working together on many portraits of both David Bowie and his alter-ego, Ziggi Stardust. In many ways, 'Women into Man' shows the influence of Bowie's Ziggi Stardust on Newton's transgressive ideas of gender. Shot for Vogue in 1976, Newton presents two women as an avante-garde conception of femininity - at once masculine and promiscuous. Situated in a hotel lobby, Newton plays with themes of self-control and the boundaries between the public and private spheres. Much of Newton's androgynous work featured the clothes of Yves Saint Laurent, the designer whose career Newton helped to launch.

“I used to hate doing color. I hated transparency film. The way I did color was by not wanting to know what kind of film was in my camera.”

Description

'Truck Stop' reflects Helmut Newton's early years as a truck driver in the Australian army. It is one of few rare images that features this motif and directly relates back to his early years in Melbourne, providing an intimate insight into Newton's personal fantasies. Expertly manipulating light, Newton transforms the model in an almost abstract conception of oil spilling out of the truck. Her powerful physique and wide posture is complimented by the industrial mass of the truck.

“I hate good taste. It’s the worst thing that can happen to a creative person.”
