Description

This candid portrait for a young, monocled Karl Lagerfeld was taken in 1973, at a time when he was producing ambitious collections for Chloé. Both men forged up a lasting friendship, connecting over their shared love of photography. Lagerfeld was a great admirer and collector of Newton's work - recently noting during an interview with Aperture magazine; "I collect Helmut Newton, tons of them. Very beautiful and huge ones. The last thing I received from him was a beautiful photo of David Lynch and Isabella Rossellini."

“I like photographing the people I love, the people I admire, the famous, and especially the infamous.”

Description

In 'Le Cadre Noir de Saumur', Helmut Newton is at his candid best, creating suggestive narratives that play on the imagination of the voyeur. Taken at France's military riding ground Le Cadre Noir, one of the most prestigious riding schools in the world, Newton's fun imagination and revolutionary use of location comes to the fore. Newton's interest in established dialogues of dominance and the male gaze is also well articulated - here added to - almost comically - by the heads of the horses.

“Growing up, I was surrounded by Nazi imagery, like everybody in Germany, and for a boy obsessed with photography it left an indelible impression on me.”

Mannequin being Tossed Off Roof

Description

Taking cue from the Surrealists, Helmut Newton often used mannequins to create work that played with our notions of objectivity and the agency of models. In 'Mannequin being tossed off roof', Newton takes compositional direction from Yves Klein's seminal 'Leap into the Void'. The unnatural form of the figure, uncommon perspective and contrast between the stillness of the figure and movement of the world below was characteristic of Newton's avant-garde imagery for the campaigns of Yves Saint Laurent.

“Photography is 10% inspiration and 90% moving furniture.”

Description

In 'Hollywood 1976 Cadillac in Garage', Newton plays on the idea of parking multiple cars in your garage. Channelling the twin boyhood desires of girls and cars, there is a sense of seduction and danger to both as they come towards you. Newton was to use cars as a prop for his work throughout his career, collecting them himself. Having driven as a truck driver and mechanic for the Australian Army during the war, they were large part of his life. The Cadillac featured in this image was Newton's own.

“My job as a portrait photographer is to seduce, amuse and entertain.”
