Description

Newton loved the romanticism of the water and spent much of his career in Monte Carlo. 'Cruising from behind' shows Newton at his overtly sexual best. Playing on the hierarchies between Captain and sailor, Newton creates sexually unabashed imagery heighted by the fantasy of the sea.

“Some people’s photography is an art. Not mine. Art is a dirty word in photography. All this fine art crap is killing it already.”

Helmut Newton

Description

'Beach Exercise' (1975) is one of the iconic images from Helmut Newton's career. Taken on a Miami beach in the mid-day heat, supermodels Jerry Hall and Lisa Taylor wrestle with each other in arrestingly dynamic compositions. With legs and arms crossing, the two show off their bodies in high-cut swimsuits. Newton favoured this high-energy photography that captured the Amazonian athletic physique of Hall and they were to forge a lasting relationship through the 70's. 'Beach Exercise' was shot for Vogue, with swimsuits by Rudi Gernreich, and is part of a larger series of fighting scenes that includes Hall and Taylor.

“There are two dirty words in photography, one is art, the other is good taste.”

Description

Helmut Newton’s 'Babes in a Rowboat' upends the Impressionist tradition of civilised boating to create a playful, mischievous scene of fun. One of his best-known themes, Newton's consistently turned to the outdoors as a provocative juxtaposition for the nudity of his images. Here, the combination of water and lingerie charges the image with a light-hearted eroticism. Newton interest in the surreal photography of 1930's comes the fore in 'Babes in a Rowboat' as he manipulates the composition to lead us to question whether the scantily clad ladies are simply a figment of the rower's imagination.

“It’s that I don’t like white paper backgrounds. A woman does not live in front of white paper. She lives on the street, in a motor car, in a hotel room.”

Description

In "16th Arrondissement" (1975), Newton subtly plays on the relationship between lady and maid. A forcefully placed hand on the side of the door and intense matching of gaze accentuates the suggestive tension of the image heightened by the threshold of the doorway. Taken in the notoriously affluent 16th arrondissement to which Helmut Newton called home, his lens acts as a stairwell voyeur cloaked by the night – allowing us a tantalising snapshot that plays on the viewer's imagination of the narrative to come. Newton is at his compositional best- using shadow's reminiscent of prison bars and the repetition of strong diagonals in the architecture and female form to accentuate hierarchies of dominance and submission.
