So what do we mean by “Super-realism”?
Super-realism, also known as Hyper-realism or Photo-realism, is a genre of art that encompasses painting, drawing and other graphic media, in which an artist studies a photograph and then attempts to reproduce the image as realistically as possible in another medium. Although the term can be used broadly to describe artworks in many different media, it is also used to refer specifically to a group of paintings and painters of the United States art movement that began in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Early Years
Paul Mellia has been practising his unique style of super-realism since the age of four, when he discovered that he could accurately recreate, in intricate detail, the characters from the comic books he was given as a child.
Suffering from severe dyslexia, undiagnosed in those days, he couldn’t read the words or follow the storylines in these comics, “I used to see words dancing on the page,” so he paid more attention to the pictures and learned to recreate the characters, making up his own stories.
“From a very early age I was able to paint them in fine detail. I wanted to make them real and show a different side to them.”

Spiderman
Commissioned by Marvel Comics to reproduce the character as a Fine Art piece, Paul Mellia gives us two images of Spiderman, one in classic style with a bright yellow background, the other depicting his “dark side.” Both the originals of these two pieces sold within hours of them first being exhibited, one by the TV personality Jonathan Ross who is a well-known huge fan of comic books. ONGallery is delighted to offer for sale the last remaining Artists Proofs. Each AP is signed, numbered and hand embellished by Paul Mellia, thus ensuring the buyer that his print is truly unique.
Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1962 and published by Marvel Comics, Spiderman is a superhero possessing extraordinary powers. Peter Parker is an orphan being raised by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben, who develops his powers after being bitten by a spider. He has super strength and ability, can cling to just about any surface, shoots industrial strength spider webs from his wrists, and has a “spider sense” alerting him to any potential danger. He must learn for himself that “with great power comes great responsibility.”

Life in Paris
After graduating from Southend College of Art in 1979, Paul’s first job was painting frescoes and 16th Century images for the Baroness De Vail in Paris. He lived an almost Bohemian and penniless existence, taking inspiration from some of the legendary greats of the art world, such as Rubin, Picasso, Dali and Gaudi. But it was Warhol’s Pop Art that resonated deepest, and this fuelled Paul to concentrate on what he loved most – images of Americana and the glamour of Hollywood.

The Fantastic Four
First introduced to the world by Marvel Comics in 1961, created once again by the genius Stan Lee in collaboration with artist Jack Kirby, the Fantastic Four are a superhero team who develop their powers after exposure to cosmic rays during a scientific mission to outer space.
Reed Richards, aka Mr Fantastic, is the leader of the group and a scientific genius who can stretch his body into extraordinary shapes and lengths; Sue Storm, Reed’s girlfriend, is the Invisible Woman who can project powerful force fields; Johnny Storm, Sue’s brother, is the
Human Torch who can burst into flames and fly, and Ben Grimm is the Thing, who is turned into a humanoid granite-skinned creature who possesses enormous strength. As the first superhero team title produced by Marvel Comics, it helped transform the company from a small publisher to a pop culture conglomerate.
Licensed by Marvel to create the Fantastic Four as a fine art piece, this is the last remaining of the original Marvel fine artworks by Paul Mellia that is available to purchase.
