Seasons

ROAD TO THE SUN – MATT FREESTONE

During a photography trip to southern Iceland, we stopped on the main road along the coast to enjoy the stunning sunset across this magical landscape.

INDUSTRIAL AUTUMN – MATTHIAS HAKER

In this romantic image of a derelict industrial building in autumn, Haker plays with the soft hues of green, red and blues to enhance the romantic sense of nature reclaiming what’s rightful hers.

WINTER TIME – GORA LUNA

These strikingly unique visions of plants protecting themselves from the depth of alpine winter suggest the majesty and strength of the natural world.

SPRUCE IN SNOW – DARWIN WIGGETT

This abstract landscape of rolling snow-covered hills has nothing but a spruce tree in the mid-distance. The smooth, almost man-made surface of the landscape shows the absolute absence of human presence.

A DESERTED CASTLE ON A SUNNY DAY II – MATTHIAS HAKER

Soft pink clashed with striking cobalt blues in this interior shot of an abandoned palace. For all its distress, Haker captures something entirely seductive in these images due to their forlorn romanticism. Outside of the windows, a magnificent view stretches far beyond, a clue to the majesty of a house that once was.

ST PETERSBURG – STUART HAMILTON

This surreal shot of St Petersburg carpeted in snow transports the city back to a historic era. A low mist shrouds the midground in this eerily empty view. Perhaps the most charming aspect of this photograph is the soft footprints that snake away from the bench and towards the Church of the Savior in the distance. We are left to question whose they are and how they got there. The long shadows suggest either dawn or dusk.

SUNBALL – DARWIN WIGGETT

Capturing the sunrise in the Rocky Mountains, Darwin creates an abstract photograph of a sun wandering lost in a sky set on fire. It’s a photograph that recalls the Romanticist paintings of 18th century English painter, John Martin, and the Abstract Expressionists in one fell swoop.

SPRING SUNRISE OVER CITY OF LONDON – HOWARD KINGSNORTH

Shot in April 2012 at sunrise from a helicopter, Howard has captured the sun rising over London from yet another perspective. This time the helicopter he’s in rises above the foreground clouds just as the sun emerges at the horizon.

DREAMING OF SUMMER – MATTHIAS HAKER

In this photograph, Haker actively engages with nature slowly creeping its way into the building. Shot through sun-filled windows, the warm dappled shadow that stretches across the floorboards emphasises the romantic and encroaching forces of nature. The colours of the palatial room come to the fore here as our eyes pick up on the warm browns, blues and finally greens of the world outside.

STARS ON ICE – MATT FREESTONE

Another image from the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon in Iceland, this time on a cold, clear autumnal night, as the Milky Way rose over the landscape. Even without the aurora lighting up the night sky, the beauty and richness of the stars create an ethereal scene over the ice.
