PIC DU MIDI – JASPER DALGLIESH

An ethereal ariel shot from the misty peaks above Pic du Midi ski observatory cable in the French Pyrenees.

FOR YOU – MO TUNCAY

In this piece, Tuncay roughly paints vertical stripes of blues and reds that resemble the masts and sails of a boat or the reflections of water. In many ways, Tuncay draws from the work of leading mid-century American painters like Willem de Kooning and Richard Diebenkorn.

VINTAGE YACHT MARIETTE – LEO MASON

This forty-two-metre classic twin-masted schooner, Mariette, was originally built by Herreshoff in the USA in 1915. A prize-winning boat, it still competes at many races. With its sales billowing majestically, this stunning black and white shot captures her in all her majesty. Leaning to one side as she turns, Mason takes in her full length, with all those dangling their legs down the side. It an idyllic image that sums up the man’s mastery of the waves.

PIRELLIS HOT DATES – BERT STERN

The great Bert Stern shot the famous Pirelli calendar in 1986, later published by Playboy magazine. This photo forms part of the Playboy Legacy Collection and is limited to just 75 prints. In this photo, a nude lady lies covered in multi-coloured oil. The effect is surreal, futuristic and slightly disturbing. Lying on top a portrait of a nude, it is as though she has almost morphed out of the painting.

NEWHALI – BRIAN GRIMWOOD

Contrasting bright pinks, yellows, muddy greens and blues, Grimwood brings to the fore his excellent skills as a colourist. Sir Peter Blake called is work as a colourist “exciting”. Grimwood’s abstract portrait of Newhali reflects the expressive colour and form of great painters such as Matisse and Picasso as well as the language of Pop Art.

JIMI HENDRIX TRIPTYCH – MIKE BERKOFSKY

A magazine called Rave offered me a break on January 5th 1967 by asking me to shoot some pictures of a new American singer and guitarist who had also just got his break in London recording ‘Hey Joe’. His name was Jimi Hendrix.

THOMAS AT THE STATION – PAUL MELLIA

Paul Mellia was the first-ever artist to be commissioned by HIT Entertainment to paint Thomas and his friends to commemorate the 60th anniversary of W.H.Awdry’s much-loved characters, voiced by Ringo Starr.

MARILYN MONROE IN A BLACK DERBY AND NOT MUCH ELSE – MILTON GREENE

From the “Black Sitting” series, New York, 1956.

LIVERPOOL STREET STATION – HOWARD KINGSNORTH

Most of us will have experienced London railway stations at some point. Many of us travel through them daily. In either case, you will be familiar with the hustle-bustle that is the microcosm of a busy London station. Here Howard has frozen the perpetual motion of what one might consider to be a city organism.

CHRISTMAS – DAVID YEO

As David Yeo tells us, “Not content with dressing the family house, the beloved family car has the same treatment. It’s large angular frame being softened with Christmas lights and a large red bow against a backdrop of red and striped flags to compliment the Christmas holiday scene.”
