Michael Bay: Lights, Camera, Fantasy

Michael Bay: Lights, Camera, Fantasy

Michael Bay featured six small snapshots of PLAYBOY models, including this black-and-white shot of Irina Voronina, Miss January 2001, and Krista Kelly, Miss April 2004. True to his intent, Bay's photo is a study in the contrast between the soft curves of the women's bodies and the black lines traversing them in the form of garters, straps and the somewhat threatening point of Krista's raised stiletto heel. The model's faces are not seen, adding to the voyeurism of the image.

“I love to take artful, exotic, voyeuristic photos. Here I tried to explore the graphic lines and curves of these women’s bodies. I think the simplicity gives them an erotic feel.”

Marilyn Monroe as Norma Jean Baker

Marilyn Monroe as Norma Jean Baker

This photo, taken by renowned pinup artist Earl Moran in the mid-1940s and purchased by PLAYBOY in the mid-1980s, was featured with other Moran images in a tribute to Marilyn Monroe written by Hugh Hefner.

"We were contacted by Jim Watters, the entertainment editor of Life magazine," said PLAYBOY Photo Director Gary Cole. "Jim knew Earl Moran's widow and she told him about these photos of Marilyn that were in Moran's files." Cole continues, "the photos were taken as artist reference. He never intended that the photos be published and he didn't consider himself a photographer. Buying all rights to these photos was probably one of the smarter moves that Playboy made during this period."

Lights, Camera, Fantasy!

Lights, Camera, Fantasy!

The inspiration for this photo comes from an image from the film She's Gotta Have It, with influence and help from photographer David Levinthal and his giant Polaroid," wrote director Spike Lee of this image.

PLAYBOY Photo Director Gary Cole, who chose this image to lead the piece, "Lights, Camera, Fantasy!" says, "I think Spike wanted to concentrate on what was in front of the camera rather than the f-stops. I think it is one of the strongest images in the portfolio."

Ladies’ Underwear 1922

Ladies’ Underwear 1922

In the July 1972 issue, PLAYBOY featured a history of undergarments, and this was one of the images used to illustrate the piece. This is the 1922 look in lingerie, and model Claudia Jennings is wearing a 'shimmy'

This shimmy seems to have fallen, exposing a good part of Claudia's decolletage, and with the accoutrements of champagne and a marabou, this is certainly a plausible, if risque, tableau of the Jazz Age.

La Vita Dita

La Vita Dita

In the beginning, Heather Renee Sweet's stage name was just Dita, and she modeled for the main magazine starting in 1997. In December 2002, she landed her first PLAYBOY cover and full feature. The editors thought she ought to have a last name — she looked up Von Treese in the phonebook, which was later misspelled Von Teese. A star was born.

It would take a tough man to match the force majeur that is Dita Von Teese, but she found a kindred spirit in Goth rocker Marilyn Manson (nee Brian Warner). It turned out Manson was pretty handy with a camera, so the editors let him have a hand at photographing part of Dita's pictorial. In her black gloves and stockings, next to a lovely peacock, Dita is standing miles away from that white cotton bra.

Kylie Bax

Kylie Bax

Kylie's was one of the kinkiest celebrity pictorials in recent PLAYBOY history, for which the subject provided much of the creative concept. "I really wanted to push the shoot," she told PLAYBOY at the time. "There were handcuffs, whips, leather pieces, chains, nipple rings. Those S&M things can make sex even more fun and more dramatic. I think the most exciting part of meeting a new person is letting him explore you."

Veteran fashion photographer Marco Glaviano shot her bondage-themed PLAYBOY pictorial.

Hotel Deluxe II

Argentini shot the Hotel Deluxe series in three days at a European — style Pasadena mansion. Irina Voronina (the kissee) is a popular Playmate and reoccurring PLAYBOY model. "Irina was the star of the shoot. I enjoyed giving her different looks — she adjusts perfectly," says Argentini. "Guido here demonstrates his wonderful sense of style combined with eroticism, very similar to some of Helmut Newton's earlier work," says Cole.

Hef on Round Bed

Hef on Round Bed

Here he is reviewing photo transparencies while smoking a pipe, surrounded by files and a freshly opened Pepsi, with candy bars at hand to assuage his well-known sweet tooth. "I think they tidied up his bedroom a bit before they took this picture," says PLAYBOY Photo Editor Gary Cole.

This photo was part of a series of images of Hefner working, taken by frequent PLAYBOY photographer Larry Gordon. Norman Solomon of International Images: "This is one of the classic shots of Hef because it shows him in the environment that he created — not surrounded by the Bunnies, but by himself indulging in the magazine. It represents so well the kind of solitude that everybody needs when they're putting together a publication."

Heather Kozar

Heather Kozar

Heather is a dead ringer for Marilyn Monroe, and for her Playmate of the Year layout, the editors played that similarity to the hilt. Arny Freytag photographed Heather as she assumed the legendary Marilyn pose, obscuring half her face with her arm, narrowing her eyes and parting her lips in a come-hither expression.

West Coast Photo Editor Marilyn Grabowski: "I was awfully impressed with her ability to incarnate Marilyn for the camera. In person, Heather has a way of looking at you that would make most red-blooded guys' toes curl."
