“The true work of art is but a shadow of the divine perfection.”
– Michelangelo
PERFECTION
WAITING IN SILENCE – MATTHIAS HAKER
Haker’s stunningly serene shot of a derelict Church is compelling in its undying majesty. He has achieved a beautiful conception of architectural form as an abstract form. Quietly religious, the photograph presents us with a view of church rarely seen in its humility. Warm sunlight floods the space- picking up the subtle grains, textures and colours within the building.
PAK ABU AND HIS NETS – YONG LIN TAN
A stunning image of the river Alor Setar in Malaysia, Lin captures the expansive sense of water and the majestic power of nature. The hazy sky covers the scene in a warmly yellow light of early morning as the local fisherman Pak Abu sets up his fishing nets along the river.
NUDE IN WATER – DANIELA FEDERICI
This ethereal photograph of a nude woman swimming in the water draws on the theme explored by some of the master’s of photography- from Helmut Newton to Richard Avedon and Mario Testino. Taken as if from the sea bed, the model’s reflection is caught abstracted over the ripples of the water at the surface of the sea. Anonymous, her head steals itself above the water for air, presenting us with an enigmatic portrait of nude swimming.
THE MOON – SHUMON SAITO
This extraordinary shot of the Moon almost transports the viewer to its surface. Resplendent in all its detail, the close-up suggests an intimacy that normally associated with views of the faraway moon. Using superb camera equipment, excellent technical knowledge and a steady hand, Saito captures every ‘hill and valley’ of the Moon’s surface.
SVOLVAER RORBU – HAMISH ROOTS
Hamish Root spent a long period of time chronicling the life and landscape of Norway’s Lofoten Islands. Here, he focuses on the small, picturesque town of Svolvaer Rorbu. Taking the edge of the town as it meets the majesty of its natural surroundings, Root focuses on the relationship between nature and the city. A long exposure enhances the beauty and colourful reflections of the water.
MASKE 2 – SANDERS NICOLSON
The soft multi-colours of this portrait in many ways invoke the aesthetics of festivals and religious occasions. Yellows, greens, blues and reds electrify the surface of her face in this intimate portrait. Former top fashion and beauty photographer Nicolson, the winner of the prestigious AFAEP Gold award, turned his back on the advertising world when he moved to the Scottish Borders. Liberated, he developed a freer, ethnic influenced style, beautifully illustrated in his “Maske” and “Edges” series.
TRUMPET LILLY – JASPER DALGLIESH
The gorgeous trumpet or calla lily is an amazing example of the ingenuity of Mother Nature. The lily is ranked as the fourth most popular flower on a global scale – a testament to their enduring status of quality and beauty. This shot was taken in Lossenham Manor, Newenden, Kent, UK.
